On Monday, November 8, I went to Policing in America, a debate/discussion hosted by President Herbert. At this event Neil Gross, from Colby College, and Brendan McQuade, from University of Southern Maine, had a conversation about policing in America. Gross presented ideas around police reforms while McQuade advocated for the abolition of policing.
I thought both speakers presented interesting points. I agreed with a lot of what McQuade said; however in order to achieve his complete abolition of policing, we would need to achieve a classless, equal society. McQuade argued that the police are here to protect the powerful, capitalistic system we have instead of the people. Again, I disagree with the idea of abolishing the police as it is clear that people need the protection that the police can provide. I more agree with Gross’ argument for reforms.
