Question 1: What is a central tension Boyer discusses in his chapter? Support your response with a quote from Boyer and at least 4 sentences of explanation.
The tension discussed in this chapter is competition and disrespect between faculty and their subjects. Over all, the main issue was faculty valuing their own course of study more than their colleagues. There is value in technology, but there is also value in knowing how that technology may affect the environment. If the teachers can’t value each other’s fields then it is only expected that the students wouldn’t either.
Question 2: What is Boyer’s “Enriched Major” idea, and how does he imagine it as a response to a key tension? Support your response with a quote and at least 3 sentences of explanation
Boyers “Enriched Major” is the integration of the “liberal and useful arts” to work towards a common goal. Boyer also had three questions to ask to check if a major is “enriched.” These questions explored the “history and tradition of the field,” the “social and economic implications,” and the “ethical and moral issues.” Looking into these topics allows students to get a deeper, more meaningful education and understanding of the world around them.
