We live in an ableist society that often ignores the needs of many of the people who live in it. There are certain things that people expect others to be able to do easily, and when a person can’t, life gets a lot harder. I think a lot of people without disabilities take the fact that we live in a world designed for them for granted. People with disabilities have been looked down on for a long time. The discrimination and horrors that they have faced historically are atrocious. A lot of people viewed that matter as survival of the fittest, seeing no issue in killing people with disabilities. In media disabled people have been painted as grotesque, take for example Shakespeare’s Richard III. People with disabilities are often categorized as different and wrong, as lesser than people without disabilities, when in reality they are as much people as anyone else. As of late, the disabled community has been gaining visibility and progress is being made to help that live in a world that previously neglected them.
